Step by Step Guide to Applying for a Canadian Education Visa

Canada Education Visa

Phase 1: Acceptance and Financing Preparations

Obtaining a Letter of Acceptance from an Educational Institution: To apply for a visa, you must first obtain a Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. Not all universities, colleges, and other educational institutions are DLIs. Be sure to check that your school is on the DLI list.

Proving Financial Resources: Canada requires students to demonstrate they can cover their education and living expenses. You must demonstrate the following: Tuition: Having paid at least one year's tuition. Living expenses: (As of 2024) a minimum of CAD 20,635 per year (outside Quebec), or a higher amount specified for Quebec. This is evidenced by bank statements, a sponsor's letter, student loan documentation, etc.

Step 2: Gathering the Required Documents

You must prepare the following documents completely and accurately. Some of them must be officially translated into English or French.

List of Basic Documents
  1. Letter of Acceptance: Original letter from your DLI school.
  2. Valid Passport: A passport with at least one blank page and valid for the duration of your visa.
  3. Proof of Financial Support: Bank statements, sponsor statement, payslips, etc. where you can show the above-mentioned amounts.
  4. Photo: Two biometric photographs that meet the Canadian visa photo dimensions.
  5. Form IMM 1294: "Application for Study Permit Made Outside of Canada" form. Filled out digitally in the online application.
  6. Family Information Form (IMM 5645 or IMM 5707): Detailed information about your family.
  7. Visionary Missionary Statement of Purpose: A compelling letter of intent explaining why you want to study in Canada and your post-study plans (including your intention to return to Turkey). This document is very important.
  8. Photocopy and translation of ID card.
  9. English/French Proficiency Certificate: IELTS, TOEFL etc. exam results (if available or requested by the school).
  10. Prior Education Diplomas and Transcripts: Your high school/college diplomas and transcripts.
  11. Travel Health Insurance: Some provinces require health insurance. While it's not mandatory at the time of application, it's highly recommended that you get it upon arrival in Canada.
  12. Biometric Fee and Visa Fee Payment Receipts.

Step 3: Choosing the Application Method and Submitting the Application

There are two basic application methods:

Online Application (Recommended): Apply by creating an account (GCKey) through the IRCC official website. All documents must be scanned and uploaded in PDF format. This is faster and easier to follow.

Paper Application: Forms are printed, completed by hand, and submitted to the Visa Application Center (VAC) along with physical copies of all documents. This method is less common.

Stage 4: Additional operations

Providing Biometrics (Fingerprints and Photograph) : Most applicants are required to provide biometric information. After submitting your application, you will receive a letter of instructions to schedule an appointment at a Visa Application Center (VAC) in Turkey to have your biometrics processed.

Medical Examination (If Required): Students staying longer than six months and those arriving from certain countries may be required to have a medical examination by a panel of doctors. This examination can be completed before or during the visa application process.

Step 5: Waiting for Application Results and Visa Approval

  • Your application will be processed by IRCC. This process can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Check the official website for the processing time.
  • Authorities may request additional documents or an interview if deemed necessary.
  • Once your application is approved, a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) will be affixed or recorded in your passport. You will also receive a Study Permit Introduction Letter . You must present this letter to the officer at the Canadian border. The officer will then issue you with the original Study Permit .

Important Points to Note:

  • Ties to Return: One of the most important factors the visa officer considers is convincing evidence that you will return to Turkey after completing your studies. Your family ties, your work or property in Turkey, and your career plans are all considered in this context.
  • Visa Rejection Risk: Incomplete documentation, insufficient financial evidence, unconvincing letter of intent or weak demonstration of return ties may result in rejection.
  • Duration: It is strongly recommended that you apply well in advance of your planned training date (at least 3-4 months in advance).
*This is a general guide. Additional documentation may be required depending on your individual circumstances. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, you should always follow the official IRCC website.
